Police in Rukungiri District are holding a man and his wife over the gruesome murder of a 23-year-old man, Sunday Innocent Akim, during a domestic altercation in Bwambara Sub County.
The suspects, identified as Mujuni Moses and his wife Mugabirwe Goodrah, were arrested following the fatal stabbing of Akim, a resident of Ncwera Cell, Rweshama Parish.
According to police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, ASP Elly Maate, the incident unfolded on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at around 9:00 pm, when the deceased intervened to protect his pregnant wife, Tusiime Harriet, who had been subjected to verbal abuse by their neighbor, Mugabirwe, earlier in the day.
“It is alleged that at about 4:00 pm, Mugabirwe, who was intoxicated, went to Harriet’s home and began insulting her, claiming she would not successfully give birth,” ASP Maate said.
Mugabirwe’s husband, Mujuni Moses, reportedly joined in the confrontation after overhearing the commotion from inside their house.
Feeling threatened, Harriet alerted her husband, Akim, who later returned home that evening and found the quarrel still ongoing. It is alleged that upon attempting to intervene, Akim was pulled outside by Mujuni, who then called on his wife to bring him a knife.
In a shocking twist, Mugabirwe allegedly handed the knife to her husband, who fatally stabbed Akim in the neck. The victim collapsed and died on the spot.
Police were called to the scene and a case of murder was registered at Rwenshama Police Station. The crime scene was documented, witness statements recorded, and the suspects arrested.
A postmortem examination was conducted, and the deceased’s body was later released to relatives for burial.
