Kayunga — The Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kayunga, Trevor Solomon Baleke, has sounded a strong warning against individuals reportedly extorting money from citizens at National ID renewal centers in Nazigo and Kangulumira sub-counties.
Baleke says his office has received several complaints from concerned residents alleging that some unscrupulous individuals stationed at the ID renewal points are demanding money from members of the public under the pretense of facilitating the process.
“I want to categorically state that the ongoing National ID renewal exercise is completely free of charge. No one should pay even a single coin,” Baleke emphasized in a statement issued on Tuesday.

He noted that the Government of Uganda, through the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), has provided all the necessary materials and personnel to ensure the smooth running of the exercise in every sub-county.
“The President is keen on ensuring that no Ugandan is left out. We have been directed to mobilize all eligible citizens to renew or register for their IDs without facing financial barriers,” Baleke added.
He urged residents to report any cases of extortion to his office, the nearest police post, or NIRA officials, warning that legal action will be taken against anyone found exploiting the process for personal gain.
The National ID renewal exercise is ongoing across the country in preparation for the 2026 General Elections, where possession of a valid National Identity Card will be a key requirement for participation.
Baleke assured the public that his office is monitoring the situation closely and that any form of corruption or misconduct will not be tolerated.
