Uganda’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs, Rt Hon Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, has officially been nominated as the NRM flag bearer for Kamuli District Woman MP—setting the stage for what is expected to be one of the most closely watched re-election bids in Busoga sub-region.
Kadaga, a political titan with over three decades in Uganda’s Parliament, used the occasion to roll out an ambitious agenda hinged on infrastructure delivery, energy transformation, and regional empowerment. “I am returning to complete what we started,” Kadaga told journalists moments after her nomination on Wednesday at the NRM headquarters in Kampala.

Among the key priorities on her 2026–2031 development docket is the long-awaited Jinja International Airport. “The construction is progressing well, and in the next three to four years, it will be internationally recognized and operational,” Kadaga said, vowing to ensure it becomes a catalyst for economic transformation in the region.
She further committed to addressing persistent local infrastructure gaps, including the unfinished Great Buwenda–Mbulamuti Road via Iringa and the dormant ferry transport system on water routes that connect Kamuli to neighboring districts. “Our people deserve better. These roads and ferries must serve communities, not just remain promises,” she asserted.
Kadaga also revealed fresh details on Uganda’s proposed nuclear power plant in Buyende District. She emphasized that her focus will be to guide a fair compensation process, ensure environmental safeguards, and most notably, advocate for the establishment of a vocational institution offering nuclear technology training. “This is not just about power—it’s about equipping our youth with the skills to thrive in the global nuclear economy,” she said.
With her nomination now sealed, Kadaga confirmed she will also contest for the position of NRM National Vice Chairperson (Female) in the party’s powerful Central Executive Committee (CEC). The post will solidify her influence both within the party and at the national level.
Having previously served 10 years as Deputy Speaker and another 10 as Speaker of Parliament, Kadaga remains one of the most seasoned legislators in Uganda’s political history. Her current portfolio in the East African Community further strengthens her credentials as a regional integration advocate.
The nomination ceremony attracted a high-powered delegation of supporters from Kamuli and surrounding districts, many chanting “Kamuli akyali ku Main!” as they led a celebratory procession through Kyadondo Road.
Meanwhile, the NRM nomination week continued at full throttle. Other notable figures who picked nomination forms included Hellen Grace Asamo (Minister for Persons with Disabilities), who pledged to promote inclusive policies under the National Development Plan (NDP), Col (Rtd) Elijah Elimu for Kaberamaido LC5 Chair, Agnes Kirabo Nantongo (Luwero Woman MP), Oliver Mutesi (Buwekula County MP), Dan Kamusiime Ruhemba (Mbarara LC5 Chair), Idd Isabirye (Bunya South), and Hellen Nakeeya (Kalungu Woman MP), who was escorted by a cheering squad of Lukaaya vendors.
According to Dr. Tanga Odoi, chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, over 1,910 aspirants had been registered across the country by June 24. The nominations close on June 30, and the National Delegates Conference is set for July 22–26, where President Yoweri Museveni is expected to be endorsed as the 2026 NRM presidential flag bearer.
“We are building a strong team that will take Uganda forward. The level of enthusiasm shows that our structures are alive,” said Dr. Tanga Odoi.
As Kadaga hits the campaign trail once more, her message is clear: it’s about completing the mission, uplifting Busoga, and preparing Kamuli for a bold, new chapter in Uganda’s development story.
