🟥 POLITICS | KAMULI DISTRICT
Mbulamuti, Kamuli – Political tensions are simmering in Kamuli after police in Mbulamuti Town Council blocked Ms Noet Nangobi, one of the Kamuli District Woman MP aspirants, from holding a public campaign rally. The police cited violation of electoral laws, insisting the official campaign period had not yet commenced.
“Don’t cause a scene. When the time for campaigning comes, you’ll have the freedom to do so, and we’ll provide you security,” said Mr Daniel Kyeyune, the officer in charge.
Ms Nangobi, who is gearing up to challenge First Deputy Prime Minister and long-time legislator Rt Hon Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, was addressing supporters when the police abruptly intervened.
“We are violating no law, but you’re being impatient. We’re ready for the challenging political journey ahead, but we call for peaceful politics,” she told her crowd shortly before being cut short.
The move sparked sharp reactions from Nangobi, who accused the authorities of selectively applying the law to frustrate her early mobilisation efforts.
She urged Rt Hon Kadaga to step down from the Woman MP race, citing her overloaded national and regional responsibilities.
“We love and appreciate Ms Kadaga’s leadership, but she’s crowded with responsibilities. Let her focus on the CEC (NRM Central Executive Committee) role, Women League, and East African Affairs. She should walk the talk of girls’ empowerment and mentorship,” Ms Nangobi stated.
Ms Nangobi emphasized that while she respects Kadaga’s legacy, the district deserves a leader fully dedicated to grassroots work, not one split across several top-level portfolios.

Other contenders in the ruling NRM primaries for the Kamuli Woman MP seat include Ms Deborah Mwesigwa and Ms Veronica Kagona. Opposition party National Unity Platform (NUP) is fronting Ms Proscovia Naikoba Kanakutanda to challenge for the seat Kadaga has held since 1989.

Kadaga, a towering figure in Ugandan politics, is seeking another term despite holding multiple roles in government and party leadership. Her supporters credit her with championing women’s rights and advocating for reproductive health, but critics like Nangobi believe it’s time for new energy in Kamuli.
