A storm is brewing in Maruzi North as voters turn their fury towards their area Member of Parliament, Eng. Nelson Lemba Okello, demanding answers over his alleged involvement in a violent political clash that occurred miles away from his constituency.
The controversy stems from a violent incident on June 24, 2025, during the Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) party grassroots elections in Apac Municipality, where angry party supporters beat up MP Okello over alleged voter register manipulation.
Now, two weeks later, voters back in Maruzi North are demanding to know: What was our MP doing there in the first place?
“Before he even thinks of coming back to ask for votes, he must tell us what business he had in Apac Municipality. We elected him to fight for Maruzi North—not to fight other politicians,” said Alex Ogwal, a resident of Angeki Village in Chegere Subcounty.
Ogwal’s sentiment echoes a growing wave of disappointment and frustration among constituents who accuse MP Okello of abandoning local development issues in favor of political interference elsewhere.
According to local accounts, MP Okello was allegedly helping influence the party register in favor of Maxwell Akora, the current Maruzi County MP, who is reportedly eyeing the Apac Municipality seat currently held by Patrick Ocan, also a UPC stalwart.
“We are tired of leaders who promote politics of hatred. Our roads are terrible, schools are failing, electricity is a dream—and our MP is busy meddling in battles that don’t concern us,” fumed Moses Etime, a resident of Baradu Village in Apac Subcounty.
Another resident, Deogratious Okunyu, demanded accountability from the legislator.
“We need him to explain how his being beaten in Apac Municipality helps Maruzi North. If he fails to come clean, then he shouldn’t bother us in 2026. We want a leader who puts this constituency first.”
Despite several attempts, MP Okello could not be reached for a comment. Phone calls went unanswered, leaving constituents and the public speculating on his motives and future political fate.
