KAMPALA – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is set to be officially nominated today, Saturday July 5, 2025, as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) National Chairman and flag bearer in the forthcoming 2026 General Elections.

The ceremony, to be held at the NRM Electoral Commission offices in Kampala, will mark the climax of months of political mobilization and countrywide wealth creation tours that saw the President traverse all corners of the country under the Parish Development Model (PDM).

Sources close to the ruling party leadership told The Eye Media that President Museveni has already secured the required endorsements from members of the NRM National Conference, positioning him as the uncontested candidate for both party chairman and presidential flag bearer.

“This is not just a nomination—it’s a reaffirmation of the people’s trust in the man who has championed peace, stability, and socio-economic transformation for nearly four decades,” said a senior NRM Secretariat official who preferred anonymity.

During his recent zonal tours, Ugandans from all walks of life repeatedly called on the 79-year-old leader to offer himself for another term, hailing his leadership for the gains in agriculture, health, education, and road infrastructure.

“We can’t afford to gamble with our future. President Museveni has laid a strong foundation. Let him finish what he started,” said Ruth Nabirye, a farmer from Buyende District who spoke to The Eye Media during the Busoga tour in May.

The nomination is expected to draw high-ranking government officials, party mobilisers, youth groups, and regional leaders who have all thrown their weight behind the President’s continued leadership.

NRM Electoral Commission chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, earlier indicated that the nomination process will be conducted in accordance with party regulations, requiring all candidates to present a minimum of 100 endorsement signatures from National Conference delegates.

“President Museveni met all the requirements with overwhelming support from every region of the country,” Dr. Odoi confirmed.

Political analysts say today’s nomination sets the stage for what is likely to be a defining campaign, with NRM framing the 2026 elections around themes of continuity, security, and economic resilience.

“Ugandans will be choosing between tested experience and unproven ambition. That choice is clearer than ever,” remarked Dr. Sarah Kayemba, a political science lecturer at UCU Mukono.

As the country gears up for the election season, the NRM faithful believe Museveni remains their safest bet for consolidating gains and steering Uganda towards a middle-income status.
