Police in Kabale district are investigating a gruesome case of mob justice in which a 23-year-old man was lynched by angry residents for allegedly mistreating his own father.

The deceased, identified as Mutabazi Peter, a resident of Nyarungwe village in Katokye parish, Kyanamira sub-county, was beaten to death in the early hours of Tuesday morning, July 9, 2025, at Rubira Trading Centre.
According to ASP Maate Elly, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, it is alleged that Mutabazi had a history of assaulting his biological father, Turyamureba John, and was also accused of stealing his property on several occasions.
The situation escalated on the night of July 8 when residents arrested Mutabazi and took matters into their own hands. The mob descended on him with fatal force, leaving him dead at the scene.

Police in Kyanamira registered a case of murder and later transferred it to Kabale. The scene was visited, examined, and documented by police. Statements were obtained from witnesses, and a postmortem was conducted to confirm the cause of death.
ASP Maate condemned the act, warning the public against taking the law into their own hands. He urged communities to report suspected wrongdoers to the authorities rather than resorting to mob action, which is itself a criminal offense.
“Inquiries are ongoing to identify and apprehend those involved in this heinous act so that they face the full force of the law,” Maate said.
The case adds to the growing concerns over mob justice in the country, where frustration with delayed justice often drives people to violence—an act police say only compounds the problem.
