Shock and fear have gripped residents of Kanyanya Cell, Rwentondo Ward, Eastern Division, Rukungiri Municipality after a 63-year-old woman was brutally murdered in her own home in the dead of the night.
The deceased, identified as Mauda Kobusingye, was reportedly attacked and stabbed to death by an unknown assailant on the night of July 8, 2025, in what authorities are calling a cold-blooded murder.
According to preliminary police reports, Mauda was at home with Roland Akankwasa, a 14-year-old boy living with mental disabilities who stayed with her. It is alleged that during the night, an unidentified man suddenly emerged, grabbed Mauda by the neck, and ordered the boy to leave the house. Fearing for his life, the frightened boy fled to a neighbour’s home where he spent the night.
The horror unfolded the following morning when Roland returned home only to find Mauda lying lifeless in a pool of blood, with visible stab wounds. His screams for help drew neighbours who rushed to the scene and alerted police.
Police, led by detectives from Rukungiri Central Police Station, immediately visited, processed, and documented the crime scene. A K9 unit was introduced in an attempt to track the suspect, but efforts were frustrated after family members reportedly mopped the bedroom and cleaned the deceased, possibly tampering with crucial evidence.
The body of the deceased was transported to Rwakabengo Health Centre III mortuary for postmortem examination as investigations continue.
Speaking on the incident, ASP Maate Elly, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the case and urged the public to remain vigilant and share any information that could help bring the perpetrator(s) to justice.
“We call upon anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspect(s) to come forward. Investigations are ongoing, and we are committed to ensuring the culprits are brought to book,” ASP Maate said.
The gruesome murder has left the community in shock, with many demanding swift action from security agencies to ensure justice for Mauda and restore calm in the area.
