Assenting to the Anti Homosexuality Act, President Museveni was exercising Democracy under as Enshrined in the Constitution- State House
State house has defended President Museveni’s decision to assent to the famous Anti Homosexuality Act on 29th May
The President’s deputy Spokerperson Faruk Kirunda in a tweet today revealed that Article one of the Constitution of Uganda dictates that Power belongs to the People hence the Head of State was fulfilling his mandate.
“By assenting to the Anti-Gay Bill 2023 H.E Kaguta Museveni was exercising democratic powers under Article 1 of the Constitution which says “Power belongs to the People”. Kirunda tweeted.
He added that Ugandans made their position clear and he had to conform their position clear and he had to conform to their wishes.
Since Monday 29th May 2023 when President Museveni assented to the famous Anti Homosexuality Act 2023, there been widespread condemnation by Human rights defenders and the international community criticising Uganda for enactment of what they call an infringement on the rights of the people.
A group of activists including, MP Fox Odoi, members of Civilia Society, academia and concerned Ugandan have since petitioned the Constitutional Court challenging the lacuna in this law.
Their prayer is for the courts of law to quash this law.
This is the second time a similar law is being challenged in the same court.
