There is a concern among residents of Iganga Municipality over a looming health hazard due to piling volumes of garbage on the streets.
The garbage crisis has been caused by the sit down strike of garbage collectors over delayed payment of wages.
A protracted strike by rubbish collectors has added a new twist to Iganga’s festering community health condition as uncollected tonnes of garbage keep on piling higher by the day. This is coupled with the littering of rubbish by the town dwellers along streets.
The Eye Media has established that the situation in an already dirty town worsened in the recent weeks with the laying down of tools by garbage collectors over unpaid wages by the Municipal authorities.
When photos of garbage piling up in one of the places where food and beverages are sold in the heart of Iganga went viral, local leaders engaged in blame games.
“I am aware of the strike which is due to non-payment for almost three months. The division authorities are the ones to blame for this,” says Bamu Lulenzi the mayor of Iganga in an audio making rounds on social media.
Lulenzi was pictured collecting garbage on Tuesday although it was not clear whether he’d really clear the entire town or was doing it for showbiz.
