Some of the parents who had students at the schools near the Ugandan border in Bukonzo county west, Kasese District have started moving their children to other schools in fear of their safety.

Last week on Friday night, ADF rebels attacked Mpondwe- Lhubiriha Secondary School in Nyabugando Ward of Mpondwe – Lhubiriha Town Council, leaving at least 43 people dead most of whom were students at the institution.

Following the incident, some schools along and near the borderline that are operating boarding facilities were forced to allow the students to go to their respective homes as security contains the situation but according to the current information, some of the learners have declined to report back to their respective schools.

Our reporter carried out a survey around the schools located near the border and discovered that security had deployed at most institutions of learning to pave the way for classes to go on smoothly in a secure environment.

At Karambi Secondary School, the Deputy Head teacher, Papa Samso, explained that following the attack on Mpondwe – Lhubiriha Secondary School, they were pressurized by some parents who immediately thronged the institution and picked their children with a promise that they would bring them back on Monday but up to now in vain.

Jamalidin Bwambale, the Deputy Head teacher at St. Charles Vocational Secondary School in Bwera sub-county, said ever since the students went home on Saturday, half of them have not returned.

At Bwera Secondary School in Mpondwe – Lhubiriha Town Council, Jocknious Bwambale, the School’s Head teacher told the press that the situation had returned to normal, adding that UPDF and Police have also deployed their personnel to man security at the institution.

Col. Cyril Mawa Muhindo, the UPDF Special Attaché to the Ugandan Embassy in Kinshasa who was found moving from one school to another addressing the learners and teachers revealed that government had finalized all plans to deploy security personnel at every institution of learning at the border, appealing to the parents to return their children for normal classes.

Columbus Bwambale, a parent from Kyarumba Town Council who was found ferrying in his two children to St. Charles Vocational Secondary School, said despite bringing them back to school, he still doubted if they would study without witnessing a similar incident that happened at Mpondwe – Lhubiriha Secondary School.
