Jinja City Council authories have finally understood the importance of the tourist attraction 100-year-old 8 Milicia excelsa (Mvule) trees along Bell Avenue West.
The authories have agreed with the general public that these trees are of great importance and should therefore be protected.
In a letter dates June 21 2023 – which the Eye Media has seen, City Clerk David Lwanga informed the Resident Engineering Team Leader/Project Manager’s Representative of Professional Engineering Consultants – the Chinese Construction company contracted to work on that road, that the trees should not be cut down.
The stoppage arose from a meeting of stakeholders at the site.
The meeting was called at the wake of protests by environmental protection activists in Jinja who even petitioned court seeking to stop the Chinese construction company from cutting down the endangered species.
The City council had already sanctioned the company’s request of putting down the trees.
But the clearance sparked protests among the already disappointed community who say the current city leadership is a big loss.
They insisted that cutting down the trees without environmental, ecological, touristic, cultural and legal considerations would be disastrous.
