In a tragic incident that has shaken Namwendwa Subcounty in Kamuli District, Kawubanya Moses, a 40-year-old primary school teacher at Kayembe Primary School, is pleading for financial help after his genitals were severed by his wife, Suzan Namuganza, on June 10, 2024.
Kawubanya, now struggling with stigma and neglect from the community and colleagues, is seeking Shs10 million for reconstructive surgery at Nsambya Hospital.
Following the gruesome attack, Kawubanya was initially rushed to Kamuli General Hospital and later referred to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he spent a month before being discharged.
He now relies on a catheter to urinate, causing him immense pain, and needs surgery to regain some quality of life.
While the government offers plastic surgery, Kawubanya says he was informed that it would only be available in 2027, leaving him with no choice but to seek treatment at Nsambya Hospital.
With only Shs2 million on hand, he remains far from the required amount.
The father of five, with the youngest child just four months old, has been abandoned by many, including his colleagues. “Despite being a teacher, my fellow teachers in Kamuli District and the Ministry of Education have abandoned me since the incident on June 10th,” he lamented.
Namuganza, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison at Kirinya Prison by Kamuli Chief Magistrate, Aisha Nabukeera, admitted to the crime, claiming she acted out of anger after her husband married another woman. Kawubanya, nicknamed “half-man” by the community, continues to grapple with emotional and physical challenges, even recalling an incident when a group of women attempted to entice him, only to mock his inability to respond.
Kawubanya’s plight is a stark reminder of the severe consequences of domestic violence and the long road to recovery that victims must endure. He now hopes for public support to undergo the much-needed surgery and begin rebuilding his life.
