In a shocking case of betrayal, an elderly widow, Justine Kyabanji, has been rendered destitute after being forcefully evicted from her land by her own sons—Moses Lubega and Eng. Matovu Bashir, an Engineering Assistant at Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).
Kyabanji and her late husband, Lubega Henry, purchased the land at Kuffu village, Busaana Town Council in Kayunga district when their firstborn, Matovu Bashir, was only three years old.
Three years later, Lubega tragically passed away, leaving Kyabanji as the sole provider for their four children, the youngest being just four months old at the time.
Rather than supporting their mother, the two sons have continuously tormented her, arresting her multiple times on allegations of trespassing on “their” land. Kyabanji has never enjoyed the fruits of the property she and her husband acquired, as her own children have treated her like an outsider.
During a heated meeting convened by the Kayunga Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Trevor Solomon Baleke at their family home in Kuffu village, Busaana Subcounty, Eng. Matovu and his brother shockingly denied knowing their own mother.
“Let her show us a marriage certificate if she wants to remain on our land. Who told her not to go to school? She is disturbing us because she dropped out of school,” Eng. Matovu arrogantly stated, while his brother Lubega cheered. Their mother, in tears, watched helplessly as the gathered community looked on in disbelief.
Matovu even went further, turning to the RDC and declaring, “Unless you go with her, we shall do whatever it takes to make sure she leaves our land and we share it.”
Not stopping at verbal abuse, the duo has dragged their mother to court in a desperate attempt to push her off the land permanently.
Fearing for her life, Kyabanji sought refuge at the Kayunga RDC’s office on Friday afternoon, pleading for protection.
“I fear they might kill me in the garden. Please help protect me against them,” the elderly widow cried, her voice trembling with fear and hopelessness.
Attempts to get a comment from Eng. Matovu and Lubega were unsuccessful. However, in a shocking revelation, Lubega posted on Busaana SS Old Students Platform, boasting about their determination to evict their own mother at all costs.
This tragic case highlights the depth of greed and family betrayal. As Kyabanji fights for her right to remain on the land she helped acquire, the question remains—will justice be served, or will her own sons succeed in robbing their mother of the only home she has ever known?
