KAMULI – In a dramatic twist to the NRM’s high-stakes internal politics, Henry Munaaba Dhikusooka, a prominent educationist and political figure from Kamuli District, has officially withdrawn from the race for the Central Executive Committee (CEC) seat representing Eastern Uganda.
Munaaba, who also serves as Director of St. Michael Schools in Wakiso, had declared intentions to challenge the incumbent Captain Mike Mukula, but formally pulled out in a letter dated June 26, 2025, addressed to the NRM Electoral Commission and copied to the party Secretary General and National Chairman.
In the letter obtained by The Eye Media, Munaaba cited the “interest of unity and cohesion within the party” as a key reason for his decision, adding that he will now dedicate his efforts to strengthening the NRM at the grassroots and mobilising support for President Museveni’s 2026 re-election bid.
“I remain loyal to the NRM and I shall continue to serve the party diligently at all levels,” Munaaba stated.
The move has sparked mixed reactions across the Busoga sub-region. Some political observers have praised Munaaba for demonstrating maturity and putting party interests above personal ambition, while others see his withdrawal as the result of intense internal pressure and political maneuvering.
Trevor Solomon Baleke, former NRM Administrator for Kamuli District, commended Munaaba’s decision and described it as a selfless act of patriotism.
“He’s the first politician I’ve heard from Kamuli who has openly declared to campaign for President Museveni. That’s commendable. Many others are busy only campaigning for themselves and little or nothing are they talking about the President when you listen to their campaign messages,”
However, some supporters who had rallied behind Munaaba hoping for a leadership shakeup expressed disappointment.
“He had mobilised well among youth leaders and sub-county structures. His exit denies Busoga a fresh voice at the CEC level,” said a female youth councilor from Kamuli.
With Munaaba stepping aside, the path is now largely clear for Captain Mike Mukula, the long-serving CEC Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda, to seek another term with competition from Hon Mariam Naigaga.
As the NRM gears up for its internal elections, all eyes remain fixed on how these early political moves will shape the broader race ahead of the 2026 general elections.
