Three senior officials of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party from Kamuli and Buyende districts have been remanded to prison on serious charges linked to electoral malpractice during the recently concluded party primaries for Member of Parliament flag bearers.
The suspects — Baliruno David, NRM party administrator; Matovu Vincent, Buyende District Registrar; and Gwambuga Godfrey, Kamuli District Registrar — appeared before the Chief Magistrate’s Court and were formally charged.
According to court records:
- Baliruno and Matovu face charges of Forgery and Uttering False Documents.
- Gwambuga is facing multiple charges including Forgery, Falsification of Tally Registers, and Conspiracy to Commit a Felony alongside others still at large.
The trio was remanded to Buyende and Kamuli government prisons respectively until 28th July 2025, when they are expected to return for further proceedings.
Their arrests follow mounting pressure from NRM supporters and local leaders who raised red flags over alleged ballot manipulation and result falsification in key sub-counties — a move many believe was aimed at influencing the primaries in favour of certain pre-determined candidates.
Busoga North Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Kasadha Michael confirmed the arrests, stating that investigations are ongoing and more suspects may be apprehended.
“The integrity of electoral processes must be protected at all levels. The law will take its course,” said ASP Kasadha.
The developments have stirred tension within the NRM grassroots structures in Busoga, with increasing calls for an internal audit of the entire primaries in the affected districts.
