BUSOGA | THE EYE MEDIA | August 4, 2025 – Anxiety and speculation continue to grip Busoga Diocese following days of swirling rumours about the election of a new Bishop.
On Sunday, 3rd August 2025, the Provincial Secretary of the Church of Uganda, Rev. Canon William Ongeng, issued a strong statement dismissing as “false and misleading” social media reports alleging that a Bishop had been elected for the Diocese of Busoga.
“No election of a Bishop has taken place in Busoga Diocese, and the information being shared is false,” Rev. Canon Ongeng said, urging Christians, the media, and the public to “ignore the falsehoods with the utmost contempt they deserve.”
The Church’s top administrative office reaffirmed that any official announcement will only be made after the due process is completed and the Bishop-elect is confirmed.
Two Popular Clerics Out of the Race
Despite the Church’s official position, the Diocese has been abuzz with speculation, with supporters of Rev. Canon Joseph Kintu and Rev. Canon Mathias Katiko claiming their preferred candidates had already been elected.
However, The Eye Media has reliably learned from authoritative Church sources that both men have been rejected in the current selection process. The reasons for their rejection remain undisclosed, but insiders say the decision is final — at least for this round.
“Their supporters should forget about them becoming Bishop, at least this time,” one highly placed source told The Eye Media.
Fresh Names Being Sought
With the elimination of the two clerics, the Diocese is now sourcing fresh names from which a new Bishop — possibly in an acting capacity — will be chosen. The process, according to Church insiders, is aimed at restoring unity and ensuring the selection aligns with the values and integrity of the Church of Uganda.
The statement from Rev. Canon Ongeng also appealed for calm and prayer among Christians in Busoga Diocese as the process unfolds.
“Church of Uganda remains committed to a fair and transparent process that upholds the values and integrity of our faith,” he said.
The latest twist in the race sets the stage for renewed lobbying and behind-the-scenes manoeuvres as Busoga Diocese awaits the announcement of its next spiritual leader.
This is a developing story.
