Police in Mbale have in detention a medic whose nurse is accused of causing the death of an 18 month old baby.
Trouble came when a nurse identified as Carol Nambafu injected the baby identifed as Sharif Mutumba with drugs at a drug shop where he died on the spot.
The incident occurred in Mukiduda cell, Mbale industrial division in Mbale city at the drug shop owned by Moses Lubowa, one of the medics working with government in Mbale.
Being the owner of the drug shop, Lubowa has been picked up by the police to aide their investigations.
Nambafu who allegedly caused the death of the child is still at large.
Elgon region police spokesperson ASP Rogers Taitika confirmed the arrest saying that the deceased’s grandfather took the child for treatment after developing chest complications and the nurse injected the toddler through the cannula before collapsing dead.
“It’s alleged that the grandfather of this child took him for treatment after developing chest complications and the nurse administered an injectable drug through the cannula but unfortunately the child collapsed and died,” ASP Taitika said.
The police say that the drug shop proprietor was detained at Mbale central police station as the hunt for the Nambafu is ongoing.
“We are hunting for Carol since she escaped after the incident but her boss was arrested and detained at Mbale CPS as we continue to ensure that the nurse is apprehended and prosecuted,” Taitika added.
Under normal circumstances drug shops are not permitted to administer drugs.
