Authorities at Jinja City Council have embarked on re-organizing the the city.
In the ongoing operation that began on Monday, the enforcement officers are sweeping into the Central Market all street vendors.
Whoever they direct to the Jinja central market is on arrival allocated one of the empty stalls.
The operation is also aimed at cleaning the Busoga’s only City and restoring sanity on it walkways.
Most of the affected vendors are those dealing in mattoke, tomatoes, shoes and chips.
However, some of the vendors have argued that the stalls in the central market are in wrong locations and untidy.
Jinja City Council Spokesperson Mr. Rajab Kito said there has been a trade disorder in the city where everybody just wakes up and starts selling things anywhere they want.
He said the operation is a resolution of Council
Mr. Kito said the council was losing millions of money in revenue because of the disorder.
Taxi drivers not spared
He futher said that the operation is not only for street market vendors but also taxi drivers who have created many stages blocking people from accessing shops and the market to go inside the taxi park.
The chairperson of the Jinja Central Market ,Mr Henry Mugimba said there is a need for organised business in the town.
According to him, the operation is going to make vendors get customers to buy their goods.
He explained that the market can accommodate up to 8000 vendors but only 3000 are currently operating inside.
The operation is conducted jointly by police and the UPDF to provide security for City Council enforcement officers.
