Chance Kahindo, the mayor of Kasese Municipality has threatened to arrest people who reportedly dispose of plastics and polythene bags along the streets.
Kahindo told this website on Wednesday that he had previously sent several warning to the people of his town but many decided to be stubborn.
“Kasese Municipality is soon to be upgraded to city status. Therefore we cannot tolerate the continuity of littering plastics and polythene bags in the town,” he said.
He announced that the council meeting on the 30th of this month will discuss a by-law to restrict littering in Kasese town with plastics and polythene bags.
If the by-law is passed, perpetrators will be subjected to heavy fines or face legal action upon arrest.
Mr. Asanairi Bukanywa, the Kasese Municipal Agricultural Extension Officer, stated that the littering of plastics and polythene bags adversely affects soil productivity.
