Maria Awino, mother of 21-year-old Natasha Kasule Nagayi, a UCU student shot at by a police officer in Mukono has spoken to The Eye Media.
Awino says her daughter who is currently nursing bullet wounds at Kawolo hospital spent the Friday night with her old boys and girls in a night club before trying to open the wrong door, leading to being shot.
The mother explained that while in the club, Natasha, a first year student of Mass Communication got tired and could not go back to the institution hostel that is locked up before midnight, so she had to look for plan B.
“She requested for one of the male friends’ key to go and rest from his room so that she could leave in the morning,” says Awino.
Awino was speaking to our reporter on Saturday afternoon from Kawolo hospital where she was attending to her daughter.
“The friend gave her the key and put her on boda-boda with directions of where the house is located but both her and boda-boda did not get the right direction of the house and ended up opening a wrong house leading to the shooting,” she added.
Blames the officer
Awino said her daughter tried to cry out for help, identifying herself as a student after the officer shooting but he instead dragged her out to the gate and left her bleeding,” she says.
The mother is now asking authorities to take action against the shooting officer.
Mistaken for a thief as she attempted to open the house of a police officer thinking it was for her male friend Natasha was shot and injured by ASP Dismas Tebangole.
The incident happened at at around 1:00am in Nabuti Village, Mukono Central Division, Mukono Municipality, Mukono District on Saturday.
“You are employed to protect property and lives of the people. Why shoot at people without asking who the person is?,” wondered the victim’s mother.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesgyire confirmed the incident.
The police has since detained the 57-year-old Tebangole and a pistol with 12 rounds of live ammunition was recovered from him by the response Police team as investigations continue.
