A 40-Year-old Police Officer died Saturday night in the river Nile waters after he allegedly jumped into the river while on duty.
The 9:30pm incident happened at Obongi landing site where Obongi ferry docks in Obongi district on the Nile.
Obongi Resident District Commissioner, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka confimed the incident.
Police in a statement identified the deceased whose body was still missing by Sunday morning as No. 64532 PC Justin Lubangakene attached Field Force Unit (FFU).
Lubangakene was on night duty on the ferry with his colleague Tadeo Azabu.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased tied a mosquito net on where he intended to take cover within the ferry and rested for while.
He later woke up abandoned his SMG rifle on the chair of the ferry and threw himself in the river.
Police say that Azabu discharged two bullets after realizing that his colleague had drowned.
“We have detained him to aide our investigations. We need to know from him what exactly happened leading to the death of his colleague,” said Hashaka on Sunday morning.
The RDC together with the police team led by Obongi District Police Commander, Bashir Bakulumpagi plus the DISO spent the night at the landing site searching for the body.
They were being assisted by local divers and by 8:00am on Sunday, the search had not yielded results.
