Won Atekerin Papa Me Kumam, Raphael Otaya has been finally installed as the first Paramount chief for the Kumam speaking community in a glamorous function filled with excitment from thousands of Kumams and other tribes.
Kumams from different areas like Soroti, Kalaki, Dokolo, Amolatar and Serere all toiled in the scorchy sunshine as they witnessed the historic event.
The enthronement of the 66-year-old chief follows an election that took place in July 2022 that saw him emerge winner.
During that Election, Otaya scored 244 votes against his other four contestants.
Otaya a retired head teacher is married to Jane Akullo with seven children.
Rt. Rev.Dr. Joseph Eciru Oliach the Bishop of Soroti Catholic Diocese tasked Won Atekerin to always read the word of God in order to lead the Kumam Community in a godly way.
“Raphael was a big angel of God. From that name we will give you God’s word to guide and protect you in your reign as the cultural leader. We hand you over this Bible and please always read it,” said the Bishop.
Kaberamaido district LCV chairman, Victor Rex Ekesu said the district council has already allocated land for establishment of the cultural headquarters.
The function was graced by the state minister for Teso affairs, Hon Celement Ongalo Obote representing president Yoweri Museveni.
Other dignitaries included delegations from Buganda, Lango Iteso Cultural Union and the Bamasaba.
