Leaders from Hoima City were are shock after finding patients sharing a ward with dead bodies at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital.
The team found three dead bodies in the male ward where patients were as well admitted.
The heartbreaking incident was discovered during a recent visit to the hospital by the leaders led by Asinasi Nyakato, the woman Member of Parliament for Hoima City.
Their visit followed a public outcry over poor services at the hospital.
Some of the complaints included negligence and extortion of patients by the health workers at the referral facility.
On asking why the dead bodies were in the ward, patients and their attendants told the MP and her team that they had contacted the health workers to removed them (dead bodies) but no one cared.
The MP was also shocked to find the wounds of mothers who gave birth by C-section rotting away at the hospital due to the inaction of the health workers.
The patients in the different wards claimed that they were told to pay between 100,000 and 150,000 shillings by health workers at the hospital for treatment but ended up being given only beds.
They added that patients and pregnant women wanting operations are told to first pay between 200, 000 and 500,000 shillings before being operated on, and those who fail to do so are not attended to.
Hon Nyakato and her team also found the hospital so dirty and bushy just like it was not being used for human treatment.
There is fear that soon dogs will start grabbing babies from the hospital since they have started accessing the maternity wards.
Hon Nyakato was accompanied by councilors from Hoima City, who called for teamwork among the leaders in the area in order to improve services at the facility.
Contacted for a comment, Evelyn Achayo, the head of nurses at the hospital blamed the situation on the overwhelming number of patients received at the facility.
