Unresolved family row has resulted into a decision to lay to rest former Supreme Court judge, Stella Amoko Arach at a public cemetery in Arua.
Since her demise, her own children and her husband (their father) remain sharply divided on where to bury her remains.
The deceased’s husband, Ambassador James Idule Amoko wanted the remains laid to rest at his home in Adjumani but the late Justice Amoko’s children insist on burying her at her parents’ ancestral grounds in Nebbi.
The children’s side was joined by the biggest number of the late Supreme Court Judge’s relatives.
Friday June 23, 2023 there was a mediation meeting aimed at resolving the impasse such that one side would give up in favor of the other.
The meeting chaired by lawyer, Francis Gimara as the mediator yielded nothing.
The two sided decided that the best they can allow is for the remains of the former Supreme Court Judge to be laid to rest at a neutral ground.
They decided that Amako should be burried at Arua Catholic Cathedral cemetery.
At the meeting, Ambassador Idule was represented by Raphael Baku whereas Martiall Alenyo represented the children.
“The families have adopted a win-win spirit to resolve this matter as it is in the interest of both parties. We the representative of both families met, discussed and agreed to receive the proposal from the family of Ambassador Amoko that the late Justice Stella Amoko Arachi be buried in a neutral place namely, Arua Catholic Cathedral cemetery,” a communication from the mediator reads in part.
Following her death, the Judiciary announced that that Amako would be laid to rest at her husband’s place in Adjumani.
Her orphans who seem not to be very good friends with their father, protested against the announcement.
They took their fight to the Family Division of the High Court in Kampala, demanding that their mother should never be burried at their father’s place but rather be laid to rest at her ancestral home in Nebbi.
The children told court that before her death, their mother told them that she should be buried near her late dad and aunt in Nebbi.
The Family Division of the High Court was adjourned to this Saturday June 24, 2023 for hearing.
