The State House Anti-Corruption Unit, in collaboration with the Uganda Police, has arrested Stella Nakayima Atwoti, the Secretary of Buwekula wards PDM SACCO in Jinja City.
Nakayima is sleeping in custody on charges of extortion.
Using her position, Nakayima allegedly deducted Shs 100,000 from each vulnerable beneficiary of PDM in her ward.
She would allegedly claim that the deductions were being taken to the parish chief.
The beneficiaries, who are mostly old and vulnerable, were left with no option but to comply with the demands.
The State House Anti-Corruption Unit received a tip-off about the alleged extortion scheme and launched an investigation into the matter.
The investigators reportedly found evidence to support the accusations, leading to Nakayima’s arrest.
The State House Anti-Corruption Unit was established in 2018 by President Yoweri Museveni to combat corruption in public institutions.
The unit is headed by Lt. Col. Edith Nakalema, who has been credited with several successful anti-corruption operations in recent years.
