Police in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe have intercepted and arrested three men transporting an SMG gun in a sack.
The three were moving on a motorcyle using the Railway bridge thats links Njeru to Jinja city.
Ssezibwa Regional Police Spokesperson, Hellen Butoto has confirmed the arrest of the trio.
She identified them as Ali Bulumba 25, Muhammed Mugogo 42, years all residents of Busana Tongolo in Nyenga Division, and RA248685 Pte Otim Caesar attached to Busana Fisheries Protection Unit.
The police officers at routine check up, got suspicious and demanded to check what the three men were carrying in the sack only for find a dismantled SGM rifle and 29 rounds of live ammunition.
“They had packed the SMG gun with 29 rounds of ammunition in a green bag. They also had two army warm suits, one army track suit and one fisheries army uniform trouser packed in a laptop bag,” Butoto revealed
According to Butoto, the suspects when grilled told the officers at the check point that the gun they were transporting in a bag belonged to the FPU officer who was escaping from his place of deployment because of harsh working conditions.
The suspects and their motorcycle Reg UFV 952D plus the SMG Reg is UG-UPDF No 958438 were by Friday afternoon held at Njeru Police Station, pending investigations.
