A 46-year-old man identified as Onacklet Agaba is in custody at Kanungu Central Police Station for alleged murder of his own 10-year-old son, Ivan Nuwagaba.
It is alleged that Agaba grabbed his son Nuwagaba, strangled him using a rope before hanging the boy’s lifeless body on a nearby mango treee to make it appear like a suicide.
The incident took place on Sunday, July 2, 2023, at around 1:00 pm at Agaba’s home in Kanyangyende village, Northern ward, Kanungu town council.
It is alleged, Agaba sent his son with Shs 1,000 to buy him cigarettes but the boy returned with Shs 500 and without cigarettes.
When Agaba demanded for the Shs 500, the child told him he had eaten it. This angered him and threatened to kill his son if he ever laid his hands on him. Agaba’s wife divorced him some time back and he was only living with the son.
Out of fear, the son ran away from his father until Agaba targeted him alone on Sunday and allegedly killed him.
On finding the boy’s body hanging on a rope, the LCI chairperson, Hellen Ayebare, alerted the police, who visited the crime scene, documented it, and conducted a postmortem.
Onacklet was subsequently arrested and detained pending prosecution. Police inquiries are ongoing. The deceased, Ivan Nuwagaba, was a pupil at Karuhinda primary school and a resident of Kazirankye village, Northern ward, Kanungu town council, Kanungu district.
