Kamuli Grade One Magistrates Court has remanded a 37-year old father and 23-year-old step mother to Kamuli Prison over child abuse.
The accused have been identified as Bumali Nondo and his wife Rachael Nambogwe, residents of Buzalabulwa village, Mbulamuti Town Council in Kamuli district.
They were charged with neglect to provide necessities to a child contrary to section 157 of the Penal Code Act.
The duo were arrested last week following concerns from community members after seeing the child on several occasions in a poor state that suggested malnutrition.
Michael Kasadha, the Busoga North Regional Police Spokesperson said Tuesday evening that the concerned residents first reported the matter to the Community Development Officer of Mbulamuti Subcounty who brought it to the attention other stakeholders.
“After resolving to take action, the Child and family protection officer at CPS Kamuli, together with the Senior Probation Officer swung into action and had the couple apprehended at CPS Kamuli as investigations started,” he said.
The mourinourished toddler was recovered, taken to Kamuli General hospital, before he was admitted at Care Medical Centre Nansana for further medical and Nutritional attention.
Further inquiries that supported the charges indicated that the victim has been subjected to denial of food and other basic rights of a child.
“The clinical look of the child supported the findings that saw the Directorate of Public Prosecutions sanction the case file after perusal,” added Kasadha.
The vigilant community of Mbulamuti has been lauded.
