Six officials in Soroti central market have been arrested for double allocation of lockups and extortion of funds from vendors.
The arrest follows a directive from Minister for Local Government Rafael Magezi during a meeting with disgruntled vendors.
Vendors alleged to the minister on Friday that the city authorities, including the leadership mismanaged the allocation of lockups and extorted funds from individuals.
The suspects in custody at Soroti CPS are; Ocaloit Benjamin, Asekenye Damali, Opiding Joseph, Eriebat John Robert, Ochengel Badru and Tukei George William.
Based on the report, Magyezi acknowledged gross corruption through extortion and bribery during the allocation process.
Vendors also raised concerns about the poor zoning of the market.
Meanwhile Soroti city East deputy RCC, Edrine Benesa welcomed the directive, expressing hope that transparency would be upheld this time.
