Shock engulfed St Michael Rugazi High School in Police in Rubirizi district after finding a lifeless body of a Senior Four hanging on a rope inside the school store.
The 18-year-old S.4 student who committed suicide has been identified as Moses Atukwatse.
According to Marcial Tumusiime the greater Bushenyi police spokesperson, the deceased was a resident of Kambiringi cell, Rutoto sub-county, Rubirizi district and a boarding student at St. Michael Rugazi High School.
It’s alleged that the deceased was last week suspended from school for escaping and was to bring a roll of barbed wire as a fine.
On Tuesday 18th July 2023 in the morning, he came to school without bringing a roll of barbed wire and the school administrators sent him back home to bring it.
However, during the night at around 2:30 am, he sneaked back to school and was sighted by one of the students climbing the wall of the school store and was reported to the school security officer and was arrested, kept at the school’s main gate sentry box.
He was then removed from the sentry box and taken to one of the school rooms used as stores, where he was locked up pending the intervention of the head teacher and police who were informed to pick up the suspect, at around 9:30 am.
James Rukaijakare, the head teacher of St. Micheal High School who reported the matter to police said that when the police went to pick him up, they found him hanging on a rope on opening the room.
The body was conveyed to Rugazi Health Center IV mortuary pending postmortem.
