Cpl Peter Avugo, a Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) soldier who allegedly shot dead his two colleagues and injured others has been arraigned in UPDF Mountain Division Court Martial sitting at Muhooti Barracks.
Maj. Bilal Katamba, the public information officer of the UPDF Mountain Division/Operation Shujaa said in a statement on Saturday that Cpl Avugo appeared before the Court Martial on Friday.
Attached to the Airforce Evacuation Component, Avugo allegedly shot and killed Private Richard Anyoro and Senior Sergeant Albert Tony Ochen on the night of July 14, 2023.
The seven-member court also heard that Avugo attempted to murder five other colleagues the same day.
Avugo denied all the charges and was remanded to Katoju Government Prison in Fort Portal city until August 4 for a reappearance in court.
In his statement, Katamba said the UPDF commiserates with the bereaved and trusts their transparent court will deliver justice.
“We pledge to keep the public informed of the proceedings until the logical conclusion of the matter.”
After allegedly committing the crime, Avugo reportedly fled the scene, before being arrested not long after in Saka along the Kagote-Kichwamba Road.
