Nakawa Chief Magistrates, Ritah Neumbe Kidasa has remanded the Kampala Central Deputy Mayor, Hanipher Mpungu over alleged land fraud.
Sent to Luzira, Mpungu faces charges of obtaining money under false pretenses.
It is alleged that Mpungu committed the offence between May and June 2022 in Ntinda, Kampala district when she fraudulently obtained Shillings 450 million from Grave Tony Mulinde Lugayuzi, promising to sell him land but failed to do so.
Despite her claims of innocence, Mpungu’s bail application was postponed because the Resident State Attorney, Doreen Elima, is currently on leave.
Consequently, Mpungu was returned to prison, and her next court appearance is scheduled for September 20th, 2023. She was appointed as Deputy Mayor by the Kampala Central Urban Council Division Mayor Salim Uhuru in July 2021.
If she is found guilty, the offense she is charged with carries a maximum prison sentence of five years.
