A clinical officer attached to Buwenge Health Centre IV is in custody at Buwenge after extorting a total 750,000 from a hernia patient before operating on him.
The suspect Juma Toola allegedly refused to work on George Datemwa unless he would pay for the would be free service.
Datemwa allegedly gave Toola an initial deposit if 400,000 and begged to worked on as his relatives looked for the balance in vain.
Toola said would only work on him after bringing the balance of 350,000.
The patient was therefore taken back home to look for the money. In the process he tipped the police who coordinated the process of arresting Toola with exhibit at hand on Tuesday November 7, 2023.
At the police station, the health worker requested to go to the toilet only to dump the 350,000 in the pit latrine.
Sure that he had the money at the time of arrest, detectives interrogated Toola until he revealed how he had dumped the dirty money in their latrine.
Officers later recovered the money from the latrine.
Toola is detained at Buwenge Police station as investigations continue.
A section of residents in Buwenge decried the rampant extortion at Buwenge Health Centre IV.
Nabikamba Muzamilu a resident of Kaabi zone says extortion is the order of the day at the public health facility.
Dr. Mwanja Wilson incharge of Buwenge health center IV said was not aware that his staff were asking for money from patients.
Jinja Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Juma Kigongo said his office had received numerous complaints of extortion and sell of government drugs at that more arrests would be made if those involved don’t change.
