Shock and tragics on December 25, engulfed residents of Jinja following reports of two young boys who drowned in Lake Victoria.
The stunning incident happened at Masese Pier, located at Masese landing site in Jinja city southern division where the minors identified as Faisal Idel, 10 and Aksali Wambede, a 10-year-old allegedly went for swimming.
It is reported that the young men had gone to spectate a football match between Kisima one United and Masese United at Lakeside Primary School in Masese and later proceeded to the banks of lake Victoria for swimming, ending up being swallowed by the lake.
“These children after the football match ended up at Masese Pier and drowned in the deep waters without any adult supervision. They were on their own,” stated SP James Mubi the Kiira region police spokesperson.
Mubi informed this publication that; “Marine police together with fishermen retrieved Faisal Idel in the evening of Christmas day while the Wambede was recovered on Tuesday morning.”
According to Mubi, a one Idel (deceased) belongs to Hanifah Kasubo and Bumali Mukungu while Sofia Nakazinwe and Abu Wambidi are the parents of Wambede who are both residents of Katende road in Bugembe Jinja city.
The bodies after transferring them to Jinja regional referral hospital were handed over to families for burial.
Mubi, however, attributed the tragic incident to negligence of parents who allegedly admitted the pleas of their children to go for a Christmas cup finals.
“How could the parents leave such young people to move freely without supervision from an adult? Questions Mubi.
Mubi said police sensitized parents on the importance of safety and vigilance towards their children before, during and after Christmas season.
