In a horrific domestic violence in Namisindwa district, police have arrested and detained a yet to be identified preacher of Christ Church in Bukhabusi Sub-county for allegedly hacking his wife to death.
The 48-year-old man of God, a resident of Malukhu Village, Butiru Parish in Namisindwa district, is said to fatally murdering his 42-year-old spouse identified as Agnes Mandala, on accusations of falling in love with another man in the neighborhood.
The purported suspicions and accusations prompted the clergyman to practice the unlawful act which chocked the faithful and the deceased’s family members who demand for urgent police probe into the matter.
The lifeless body of the deceased was discovered on the banks of a near deep stream of water on Wednesday, according to Rogers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson.
Responding to the disturbing criminality, a Police canine unit was dispatched to the scene, leading investigators to the suspect’s residence, where personal belongings of the deceased, including a phone, were found in the possession of the suspect.
Taitika, revealed that the deceased, who was 22 weeks pregnant, exhibited signs of wounds on the spleen as the postmortem reports confirmed.
Taitika urged couples to desist from resorting to violence and elaborated the relevance of amicably resolving marital issues.
He share the growing statistics of domestic violence cases in the Elgon region, revealing that between January and June 2023, 70 cases were recorded and four murder occurrences unfolded the from domestic disputes.
The statistics also undressed the alarming numbers of child-related offenses comprising of torture, defilement, rape and neglect among others.
Baker Mwanya, the Mbale Senior Development Officer (DCDO), attributed the surge in Gender-Based Violence (GBV) to factors such as poverty, traditional beliefs, and lack of awareness.
