Private Simon Peter Magawa, 30, a UPDF officer attached to the 03 Infantry Battalion and four other boda-boda riders are facing charges of aggravated robbery following an alleged robbery that left a SMG rifle missing.
It alleged that George Mugerwa, a resdent of Victorious zone in Nansana, and other cyclists including a 33-year-old Nelson Ssekadde, Tom Maswe, John Ssekiranda alias Young and Joseph Ssegujja, a resident of Kawawa-Lwamata in Kiboga district on December 24, 2022 attacked Edrine Luyimbazi, robbing UGX1.5 million, SMG rifle number 128132695 and 60 rounds of live ammunition.
According to prosecution, the gun belonged to Brig Gen Mathias Ssewankambo, a Ugandan senior UPDF officer and suspects during the attack had deadly weapons.
Presiding over on Monday, Brig Gen Freeman Robert Mugabe read them the charges the charge of aggravated robbery which the suspects denied.
State prosecutors led by Lt Col Rapheal Mugisha and Lt Alex Mukwana informed court that investigation into the matter still ongoing and asked for an adjournment to February 28, 2024.
Magawa was remanded to Makindye Military detention while the suspected civilians were detained to Kitalya government prison.
The offense which that does not attract death upon conviction is contrary to sections 285 and 29 of the Penal Code Act Cap 120.
