The Deputy RDC of Namayingo, Trevor Solomon Baleke Friday January 12, 2024 night caused immediate re-arrest of Job Wafula a nurse at Lolwe Health Centre III in Lolwe Island Subcounty, Namayingo District.
Wafula who was early Friday January 12, 2024 morning arrested on tip off by a concerned citizen, had been released by Kandege police post OC, Vicent Okwakol with Lolwe Subcounty Chief, Charles Oundo standing surety of the suspected thief of government drugs.
Rumors first spread in the day, how the suspect was looking for all possible ways of getting out of custody by forfeiting his January salary.
Wafula was later at around 7:30pm released from custody and taken away by the Sub-county chief.
But information reaching this desk indicates that his freedom was too temporary with Mr. Baleke causing his re-arrest by 10:00pm.
“I received information from another concerned citizen that the suspect is out before they could even record statements from witnesses. This is unacceptable. Therefore I have asked both the OC and his surety the SACAO to make sure Wafula is brought back so that the necessary steps are followed for him to be released,” said Mr. Baleke when we contacted him this morning.
Theft of government drugs in very rampant in Namayingo district. For example last years, more doses of antimalarials and malaria test kits were given out than the number of cases handled.
It is further reported that, suspects of drug theft would always bribe their way out before their files could even reach the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for perusal and advice.
“The more we keep on releasing these suspects, is the more we shall be creating liberty for others to have opportunities of stealing our drugs which is really unacceptable,” he added.
Mr Baleke before cautioning health workers to refrain from stealing government drugs, maintained that Wafula shall be arraigned before member of the public at Lolwe subcounty headquaters play ground and publicly apologize before being released.
