The leader of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu popularly known as Bobi Wine, is disappointed with the silence of the United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Antonio Gutierrez, on the human rights violations in Uganda.
Antonio Gutierrez was one of the important visitors in the recent Non-Allied Movement (NAM) Summit hosted in Uganda at Speke Resort, Munyonyo in the Uganda capital, Kampala.
Bobi Wine in his statement, blamed the UN chief for his failure to hint on the growing statistics of oppressions and torture of citizens in African countries especially Uganda, urging the international body to stand on the values it “purports” to represent.
“Mr. United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Gutierrez, it is disappointing that on your visit to Uganda, you have not spoken for the millions of Ugandans and others within the region who are oppressed by your host – a renowned brutal dictator, Gen. Museveni!” Stated Bobi Wine.
The NUP principal who didn’t forget his usual hashtags of “FreeAllPoliticalPrisonersinUganda, BringBackOurPeople and FreeUganda”, highlighted that the Gutierrez’s presence in Uganda would have made a vital impact iff he addressed the gross human rights violations, military trials of political opponents and others.
“While you spoke at Munyonyo, opposition leaders including myself are either under house arrest or on the run from the military! Museveni recently closed down the UN Human Rights Office. How can you come all the way and not say anything about these issues? Questioned Bobi, the ghetto gladiator.
However, President Museveni’s Deputy Press Secretary, Faruk Kirunda, lashed Bobi Wine for being unknowledgeable about statecraft, emphasizing that UN is well-versed with the Uganda’s true record of human rights.
“Bobi Wine needs many lessons in statecraft. The UN Secretary General is well placed to know exactly what goes on anywhere in the world. He has enough Intel and a system to detect serious issues to attend to,” said Kirunda in a tweet on X.
The statesman (Kirunda) further wrote that; “He (Gutierrez) cannot engage with stuntmasters seeking to attract cheap attention when the world is discussing genuine issues of concern.”
Bobi Wine has repeatedly flied to foreign countries especially United States of America (USA) and United Kingdom (UK) and others to report the distressing practices and the alleged dictatorial rule of the long-serving Gen. Museveni, advocating for cut off of the financial aid and other donations to Uganda.
