Joseph Ngobi popularly known as Musayi Muto, a leader of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) in Jinja city has gone into hiding some days after reportedly receiving phone calls from unknown individuals threatening to abduct him.
Representing Namulesa North ward to Jinja Northern division council, the outspoken councilor is one of the renowned critiques of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) government who has always demanded for the release of the NUP political prisoners and singing slogans of “We are removing a dictator”.
According to reportings, Ngobi on Thursday, January 25 received several phone calls in the evening from phone number (0704431456) with intimidations of making of kidnapping him.
The threats have since sparked off the missing the frank local councilor while allegations indicate that he is on the run and camouflaging for his dear life.
It is important to learn that the alleged abduction and death threats against NUP “men” have become common following the recent reports that three popular radio legendaries in Jinja are wanted dead.
The well-liked comedian, Hussein Muyonjo alias Swengere one of the top leaders of NUP in the Eastern Busoga subregion and a local broadcaster at Baba FM, Hassan Muwanga, and Rogers Mbajjwe attached to Busoga one FM reported a threatening violence case at Jinja CPS on Monday also after receiving threatening phone calls.
Ngobi whose whereabouts are still unknown, was recently quoted in a local television station (Baba tv), decrying that the government is targeting to terminate all critiques who do not agree with its rule.
He said that; “We have no voice, we are like refugees in our country living in fear and panic, we are oppressed and suppressed, our rights are blatantly abused and we have nowhere to run.”
However, police in Kiira region on Monday cautioned the politicians against faking own abductions and giving police wrong information and vowed to arrest anybody who would misuse social media posts and attribute it to death threats.
