The 2021 general elections featured several political parties, including the then newly formed National Unity Platform (NUP) that was birthed by the vibrant pressure group “People Power.”
Initiated in 2017, People Power invaded the country when the Hipop-turned politician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine, entered the political atmosphere of Uganda and proposed for the top seat to unseat president Museveni.
Given its minority, NUP that had no structures in the country’s political field faced challenges of determining the potential candidates that would compete in the respective constituencies and local government positions.
The party’s secretariat fidgetingly entrusted powers to incompetent individuals to select and determine potential candidates, which “brown envelopes” was a language in offices to secure the party’s flags.
Headed by the secretary General, David Lewis Lubongoya, the party secretariat after undergoing repeated criticism following the vague processes of selecting candidates, called for evidence from leaders who were charged to obtain the party’s flag.
“If there is anyone who was charged any amounts of money to obtain a card in the recent general elections, please bring the evidence and show the public,” stated Lubongoya recently while hosted on a local BBS television in the morning show “Zuukuka Nensonga”.
The party authorities have since refuted the allegations of internal corruption despite claims from the said haters.
In his response to Lubongoya’s plea, the Rubaga South Legislator, Hon Alyosious Mukasa, unmasked the party when he shared a receipt acknowledging payment of shs95 million to the party.
During a live political show dubbed “Amaso Kuggwanga” at BBS television, Mukasa emphasised the payment, saying NUP authorities successfully received the money and even issued a receipt to the lawmaker.
The receipt seen by this publication indicates that it was issued on August 28, 2020, with the ninety-five million shillings received from Alyosious Mukasa being payment for “Member of Parliament for Rubaga South in 2021.
The legislator noted that the constituents of Rubaga South consumed a tune of one billion shillings to entrust him with powers of representing them to the August House.
Mukasa says it is now time to regain his funds spent in the hotly contested elections.
It is important to note that the leading opposition party NUP has been dumped by some MPs including, the Njeru Municipality’s Jimmy Lwanga and Bukoto South’s Twaha Kagabo who joined the newly formed Uganda Patriotic League (UPL).
Kawempe South’s Bashiri Kazibwe Mbazira also believes UPL’s leader, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, is the best political figure to succeed President Museveni.
