Two parents in Kanungu district are in police cells on circumstances surrounding the death of their 2-year-old son who was secretly buried without the knowledge of community members.
Police identified the lovers as Gerald Ampereza and Prossy Ahurira, the stepmother of one Ampereza (victim), who are residents of Kyomuringa cell Nyarutojo parish in Kambuga sub county Kanungu district.
According to allegations, the duo is suspected to have gotten tired of the young boy who was born with health complications after he continued to fall sick in this month of March.
It is said that following the persistent illness, the stepmother took the deceased to Kambuga hospital, and medical workers advised that the sick child needed to be operated.
Shocking, residents developed suspicions when they could no longer see the child at their home, prompting the area chairman Emmanuel Mugisha to intervene the concerns.
During comprehensive interrogatations from the villagers led by the chairperson LC1, Ampereza (father) revealed that his son died and buried him by himself, something that is not commonly done.
Police confirmed that fresh soil was discovered behind the family toilet, which is suspected to be the grave.
ASP Elly Maate, the spokesperson of Kigezi regional police informed this publication that both parents, the father, and the stepmother were arrested.
“Scene of crime was visited and documented, and fresh soil was discovered behind the toilet which is suspected to be the grave,” said Maate.
As enquiries proceed, Maate said an exhumation and postmortem are pending a court order.
