Authorities in Mbale district are hunting for suspected thugs who reportedly attacked a census enumerator and vanished with all the gadgets she was using in the exercise.
The incident which occured Thursday May 16, 2024 night left Enumerator Sharon Mutuma with no gadget to proceed with the exercise.
This prompted the authorities in Mbale to suspend the exercise in Bufumbo village, Bufukhula parish, Nyondo Sub County, where she had been deployed.
It is said that the alleged thugs targeted the enumerator on the night when Mutuma was in deep sleep.
According to reports, they first sprayed the Enumerator’s house with Chloroform before breaking into and taking off with the items.
Asumin Nasike, the Mbale Resident District Commissioner (RDC)
confirmed the incident, saying that the government iPad, which the enumerator has been using to conduct the counting exercise and other items like phones and keys were among the items taken by the wrong elements.
“The enumerator woke up late in the morning today, 17th May, 2024, and established that the house had been opened. Her items were missing, and that is when she alerted the authorities and reported the matter to Nabumali Police Station,” the RDC said.
“The RDC’s office, together with police have collaborated to ensure the gadgets are recovered and to apprehend the individual behind the disturbing moved, oing what it takes to recover the government gadget and arrest these suspected thugs who were behind this theft,” she vowed.
According to the victim, unknown individuals are calling her demanding money as ransom before bringing back her gadget and other stolen items, which the RDC confirmed that they got the phone number they were using to call Sharon.
Security experts have embarked on using it to track the suspects.
