Moses Bigirwa, the renowned mobilizer for the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), is now a threat to the party after he formed a pressure group away from NUP and named it the Eastern Revolutionary Platform (ERP).
His wayforward comes at a time when the former aspirant for Kamuli Municipality MP seat was sacked from the NUP as the head mobilisation for in charge of the Eastern region.
Bigirwa who was number five among the found members of NUP launched is parallel pressure movement on Tuesday, May 28, 2024.
According to the Namayingo Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC), Trevor Solomon Baleke, Bigirwa’s dumping NUP for a pressure group is a big blow to the Makerere Kavule based young political party.
While hosted on Smart FM’s ‘Reference Point’, a political talkshow moderated by Sir Grace Mogan, Baleke on Wednesday May 29, 2024 evening advised the NUP to swallow their pride and arrogance and treat Bigirwa’s resignation as a crucial factor that would potentially lead to the weakness of the opposition party in Busoga.
“If any party loses a member, it is surely a loss, and it must be attended to. A member going means a vote has gone, which is not an achievement,. And in Bigirwa NUP lost a key fearless mobilizers,” Baleke said.
Baleke a veteran journalist was responding to the submissions of Mr Andrew Kizza Kaluya, who was also a panelist on the show.
Kaluya, who replaced the embattled Bigirwa as NUP Eastern mobilizer, has earlier said Bigirwa was free to go and the party would still remain strong.
He has also earlier stated that Bigirwa’s going was an obvious deal following his individual ambitions.
But Baleke argues that the NUP should address the issues that are triggering the continuous exodus of its key members. He said the defection of the likes of Bigirwa was a bit sign of a problem within NUP.
“The party is weakening if Bigirwa who built it Busoga can go. Dabada and Luuka coordinator recently left. Some youths from Kamuli district threatened to mobilize against Kyagulanyi. Do you think that is strength?” he wondered.
Baleke also challenged NUP leadership to pick interest in knowing who could be behind Bigirwa.
“As a fellow Musoga, resident, and age-mate, I took the initiative to contact Bigirwa about the formation of ERP. He said the NUP is confused. They fired him without any reasons,” Baleke added.
Baleke observes that Bigirwa’s initiative of awakening the people of Eastern Uganda to demand for shares of national cake would be fueled by invisible individuals and won’t leave NUP the same in Busoga.
