Dr Idi Menya, a son of Busoga land, has formally announced taking on the long-serving president Yoweri Museveni in the anticipated 2026 general elections.
He made the official announcements in Jinja City on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, when addressing journalists at Mansion Hotel.
“I thank the people of Uganda for enduring the longtime suppression. I today declare that the suppression in ending in 2026,” Dr Menya boldly made proclamations.
A born of Jinja district, the 35-year-old Menya says he has come to challenge Mr Museveni, who has since ruled the country for almost four decades.
“Uganda has been in the dictatorial rule since independence. I am glad that that the long-time awaited president has come, and it is me, Idi Menya,” he said.
He said Uganda has got a president who is pro people and ready to take on the country in a Democratic leadership.
Menya says he has come to address the corruption, insecurity, land grabbing, and transforming the education sector.
He is not afraid of the military regime of Museveni, and his movements shall be smooth across the country, according to him.
“I have come to fight unemployment in this country. We are going to set up industries and restore our industrial towns,” he said.
“My rule shall abolish abuse of our predecessors. The rule of Idi Amin, Obote, and Museveni we shall say they ended and no one shall talk about them. We shall only concentrate on ensuring the development of our country,” he further stated.
Menya, in previous 2021, general elections contested for Chairperson LC5 in Jinja district, which was futile when he failed to solicit the necessary signatures.
Belonging to the National Unity Platform (NUP), the aspiring president, says he is not coming as a NUP candidate and has no dreams of quitting the opposition party.
“NUP has it own. I am coming as Menya. I assure you that I am going to win this election with 90%, Museveni will get only one per cent,” he said.
