Kanungu road accident death toll rises to 5, scores in critical condition

The territorial police in Kanungu on Saturday, june 22, 2024, registered a fatal road accident that has so far claimed five lives, according to reports.

The incident occured at about 5:30 at Nyakashure along Rukungiri Kihihi highway in Kanungu district.

A motor vehicle RAD 940J/RL1455 and UAW 904R ISUZU ELF blue were involved had a head-on collision.

Four victims including; Byamukama Fred (driver), Akandwanaho Reagan, Kyarisima Thereza, and Tumuramye Genariyo died on the spot. They were all of Kinanira cell Burora parish Nyarushanje Sub county Rukungiri district.

Elly Maate, Kigezi region police spokesperson, said that a yet to be identified male adult died from the hospital where they had been rushed, making the number of deaths five.

“It’s alleged that M/v Reg no. RAD 940J/RL 1455 Trailer was moving from the direction of Rukungiri heading to Kihihi side, and when it reached Nyakashure, its driver left his lane and knocked an on coming M/v Reg no. UAW 904R Isuzu ELF Blue from Kihihi side on its lane, killing four of its occupants on spot and injuring four others critically,” Maate said in a statement.

“The police were informed, the scene was visited, and victims rushed to Kihihi health centre four where the fifth victim died from,” he added.

The bodies of the other four deceased persons were taken to the Kihihi health IV four mortuary for postmortem while involved motor vehicles will be towed to Nyamirima police station pending IOV inspection, according to Afande Maate.

The officer further stated that inquiries to establish the likely cause of the accident are underway.
