The fight to save CN Sugar factory in Namayingo District Friday July 5, 2024 took a new twist as Police summoned Namayingo district LCV Chairman, Ronald Sanya and his Vice Abdallah Twaha Kawuta for what the Busoga East Regional CID Officer has termed as inciting violence.
Sanya and Kauta are given Tuesday July 9, 2024 as the day they must appear before Detective SP Prossie Namukasa, the Busoga East Regional CID in Iganga without fail.
According to the summonses seen by the news agency, the two top political bosses are accused of inciting the public to demonstrate against the revocation of no objection to establish CN Sugar factory by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Francis Mwebesa.
Sanya is also accused of telling the people of Namayingo on several occasions to burn sugarcane trucks belonging to Bugiri Sugar Ltd.
“we have evidence that Bugiri Sugar is behind the revocation letter of no objection issued to CN Sugar Factory by Trade and Industry Minister Francis Mwebesa recently” Sanya told locals during a meeting at Nsango village Monday 1st July.
Sanya also informed the meeting how he had petitioned the Inspector General of Police against Namayingo DPC, SP Joseph Kamukama for what he termed as being corrupt, torture of wanainchi and fighting development in the district.
During a public meeting on Monday this week where the workers of CN invited their RDC to narrate to him their plight, Mr Sanya said ”I have audios where the DPC Joseph Kamukama was luring me together with my Vice to shun the fight of saving CN Sugar in exchange of huge sums of money from Bugiri Sugar Ltd”.
Mr Sanya added that “I have already submitted those audios to his superiors as evidence to support my petition against the DPC”.
It could be that it is as a result of those utterances that the Police have reacted by summoning him and his Vice Abdallah Twaha Kawuta who also serves as chairman of the CN Sugar Outgrowers.
”Under section 27A of the police Act, the police are empowered to invite/summon/require the attendence of any person whom the police have reason to believe has valuable/relevant information, exhibits or documents to assist the Police” she wrote.
“You’re therefore required to report to the regional CID Office Busoga East Iganga on 9th July 2025 at 10:00AM,” reads the summonses signed by Namukasa.
Contacted for a comment, Sanya and Kauta said they were ready to go and face the police.
“I said it before and I can repeat, I shall do whatever it takes to defend what belongs to my people. CN has already employed more than 600 of the young people and this has enhanced their income but also the security of the area. So if it means being arrested for helping my people, I am ready,” Sanya told this news agency.
