Nelson Bagaga, the chairperson of Parish Development Model (PDM) SACCO for Wansimba parish in Butagaya subcounty, Jinja district is under detention for reportedly turning the project beneficiaries into his sources of income.
The 60-year-old PDM chairperson who was arrested on Friday, July 11, 2024, is accused of extorting money from beneficiaries.
His arrest was confirmed by the Kiira region police mouthpiece, SP James Mubi.
According to Mubi, reliable documentary evidence indicates that, in the month of March 2024, Bagaga purportedly solicited five hundred thousand shillings from four people under the disguise of making their names priority on the list of PDM beneficiaries in the area.
The victims include Joyce Nakaibale, Norah Ndikusooka, Addul Busengese, and Alex Katbula.
“We arrested him because of his habits. He is being charged with obtaining money by false pretence (OMBFP),” Mubi the Eye Media Saturday morning.
The suspect solicited between the range of thirty-five thousand shillings to fifty thousand shillings (shs30,000 to shs50,000) that accumulated to a tune of five hundred thousand shillings (shs500,000).
The suspect reported to be undermining the government initiative is currently detained at Buwenge central police station (CPS).
PDM chairpersons in the region have been seriously warned against misappropriating funds meant to improve the livelihood of people.
“As security in Jinja, we shall not tolerate such acts of economic sabotage,” Mubi said.
