ganda is mourning the untimely death of Hon. Sarah Mateke, the Kisoro Woman Member of Parliament and Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs. Hon. Mateke, aged 49, reportedly suffered a heart attack and was rushed to Mengo Hospital on Saturday morning. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The news of her sudden demise has left the nation in shock, especially her colleagues in government and the people of Kisoro District, whom she had served with dedication. Hon. Mateke was known for her passion for women’s rights and her advocacy for the development of her home region.
Born into a political family, Mateke followed in the footsteps of her father, Philemon Mateke, who also served as a Minister and held the Kisoro District leadership for years. She was widely respected for her leadership abilities and commitment to national service. She was an active member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and played a crucial role in shaping government policies, particularly in her capacity as a state minister.
As news of her passing spread, tributes poured in from fellow leaders, colleagues, and constituents. President Yoweri Museveni described Hon. Mateke as a “dedicated servant of the people” who had contributed significantly to the peace and security of Uganda, particularly in her role in the Defence Ministry.
Her constituents in Kisoro are especially heartbroken. Many recall her as a hands-on leader who was never too busy to listen to their concerns and who worked tirelessly to ensure her region’s voice was heard in Parliament.
In addition to her political work, Mateke was an advocate for girls’ education and women’s empowerment, often championing causes that sought to uplift marginalized groups. Her death leaves a significant void in Uganda’s political landscape, especially in the ongoing efforts to promote gender equality in leadership.
The government has announced that burial arrangements will be communicated in the coming days, and Hon. Mateke will be accorded an official state funeral to honor her service to the nation.
Her passing is not just a loss to Kisoro District but to the entire nation. Uganda mourns the death of a leader whose legacy of service, compassion, and commitment to national development will not be forgotten.
