On Thursday, September 12, 2024, Nakaseke District Fisheries Officer Edmond Mpatta was re-arrested by police in Kiira Region, Jinja, in connection with a murder case dating back to August 2023. Mpatta is accused of playing a role in the death of Kigenyi Alex, a case that has sent shockwaves throughout the community.
According to James Mubi, the Kiira Region Police spokesperson, the deceased, Kigenyi Alex, was reportedly apprehended by Mpatta and his associates before being subjected to torture at Mpatta’s residence. With the assistance of a local watchman, Sande Joseph, who remains at large, the victim was allegedly confined, tortured, and subsequently killed. After the murder, Mpatta is said to have transported the body in his vehicle, a car registered as UAL 998B, and disposed of it near Busoga College Mwiri School in Jinja.
The police were tipped off by community members who had suspicions regarding the circumstances surrounding Kigenyi’s death. Their investigation was further bolstered by CCTV footage showing Mpatta driving the car containing the body. This crucial piece of evidence led to the Fisheries Officer’s arrest.
While Mpatta was initially apprehended following the incident, his re-arrest this week signals continued efforts by law enforcement to bring all those responsible for the crime to justice. Authorities are also intensifying efforts to apprehend the watchman, Sande Joseph, who remains on the run.
James Mubi assured the public that the police are working diligently to ensure all parties involved in the murder face the full extent of the law.
